About
This program was created to help find and build community for incoming students from BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds. We aim to connect mentors with other students from similar backgrounds to help guide our students toward academic and social success.
Navigating the differences between high school and college is often a challenge for many first year students; this can especially be difficult for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ students. Given this, we aim to provide peer mentorship to students from these identity spaces, however this program is open to any student interested in participating. Peer mentors are chosen and trained to assist other students entering SUNY Oneonta for their first academic year in acclimating to the campus setting.
This program offers freshmen the opportunity to learn from the academic and social experiences of successful BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ students. Don't worry, none of these Mentors are PERFECT, many of them have had to learn their lessons the hard way. These lessons have empowered these mentors to model the way for incoming students from similar backgrounds!
First year students that participate in this program will additionally benefit from programming designed to get you over the bumps in the road like dealing with roommates, figuring out ways to deal with academic pressures, and finding your community on campus.
